PART TIME RESEARCH

PART TIME RESEARCH

College of Engineering Trivandrum is an approved centre for part-time research under Kerala university. The candidates shall enrol as research scholars in the office of the evening courses of the college and remit fees as mentioned. If a scholar fails to remit the semester fees the person will be considered to be discontinued. However,  a grace period of 6months will be given for remitting the required fees failing which  the person will have to obtain re-admission.

Candidates can register for part-time research in the University of Kerala as per the conditions stipulated by the University.

a)     Part-time PhD registration shall be restricted to teachers of the University in the concerned subjects and to those persons engaged in research institutions provided they qualify the entrance test.

b)    In exceptional cases based on the recommendation of the doctoral committee, the syndicate may allow persons other than teachers in affiliated colleges to register as part-time research scholars provided they qualify the entrance test.

c)     Part-time research scholars other than those working and/or residing in the headquarters of the supervising teacher should spend a period of at least six months at a stretch or in not more than 3 instalment at the centre of research before they are allowed to submit the thesis. A certificate showing that the candidate has worked in his institution should be furnished by the Head of the centre for research at the time of admission of the thesis.

d)    On the recommendation of the supervising teacher, the Doctoral Committee shall consider the request by a candidate for conversion of registration from full-time to part-time or vice-versa and make appropriate recommendations to the University.

e)     Candidates applying for registration to do part-time research shall produce along with application a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the employer concerned

All candidates are required to register under Kerala University following the regulations put forth. The university will constitute a doctoral committee for each scholar which will recommend the candidate for admission after prescribing the necessary course work to be undertaken.

All research scholars are required to follow the regulations relating to registration for the award of the degree of doctor of philosophy as updated at University Research portal

As per Kerala University regulations, each scholar is required to undertake 3 courses of which one is common to all-research methodology. The other two will be prescribed by the doctoral committee. Examination on research methodology will be common for all researchers The examination for the other two will be conducted individually. The doctoral committee will prepare the syllabus as well as the question paper for the candidate and the exam will be conducted by the university. There will be no separate contact classes for the courses.

All full-time research scholars availing financial assistance of any category are required to engage 8 hrs of department work (teaching assistance) as assigned by the HOD in consultation with the guide.

For each part-time as well as full-time research scholar, there will be a progress monitoring committee which will assess their progress once in 6 months, the report of which may be utilised by the funding agencies if required, for disbursal of the stipend/fellowship.

The progress monitoring committee comprises of the following members:

One member from the same department : (He/She  shall be a PhD holder, nominated by the   Dean in consultation with the guide)

One member from an external department:  (He/She shall be a faculty from any other department of CET, nominated by the Dean in consultation with the guide, preferably a research guide)

A full-time research scholar may be allowed casual leave up to 20days per year subject to the condition that such leave cannot be taken at a stretch. The casual leave cannot be combined with any other kind of leave than the public holidays and casual leave cannot be carried over.

Women research scholars are eligible for maternity leave for a period of 135 days only once during the entire tenure of their research period.

Each research scholar can avail two months (60 days) medical leave on medical grounds during the entire tenure of their research period.

A research scholar may be permitted to avail leave for joining spouse for a maximum period of six months at a stretch during the tenure of research without stipend. However, those availing higher education scholarship will get the stipend for the extended period, after the leave.

Higher education scholarship will be granted during maternity as well as medical leave eriod. Grant of other fellowships during the leave period is decided by the concerned agencies from time to time.

Those research scholars with guides external to CET requiring a facility certificate from the Principal, CET should produce a consent letter from an internal supervisor from CET, who is the PhD holder, not necessarily a registered guide, who is in charge of the labs where the candidate proposes to work.  If the faculty in charge of the concerned lab is not the internal supervisor  himself, then the internal supervisor as well as the lab-in-charge should give their consent in the required facility certificate application form.

 Foreign nationals are also admitted as full-time research scholars following the regulations put forth by the university.

  1. Consent letter from an approved Kerala University guide having guide ship under faculty of Engineering and Technology*,whose center for research is College of Engineering Trivandrum. The letter should also quote the university order approving his/her guide ship ( attach proof) and the number and names of scholars he/she is presently guiding, under Kerala University.
  2. If the guide is external to College of Engineering Trivandrum, then the candidate should produce, apart from the above letter, a consent letter from an internal supervisor from CET, who is a PhD holder, not necessarily a registered guide, who is in charge of the lab where the candidates proposes to work. If the faculty in charge of the concerned lab is not the internal supervisor himself, then the internal supervisor as well as the lab–in- charge should give their consent in the required facility certificate application form.
  3. Proof for scheme under which admission is sought.(CERD, Speed-IT, Higher education scholarship scheme, or any others)
  4. Proof that the candidate is not employed, or if working, proof that he/she is on leave without allowance for the period of research(to be mentioned in the relieving order)
  5. Copy of certificate proving eligibility for registration under Kerala University for PhD under faculty of Engineering and Technology (except for scholars of Chemistry department), with regard to the Master’s degree undergone.
  6. M. Tech degree certificate and mark list
  7. TC and conduct certificate from the institution last attended.
  8. Physical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner.
  9. SC/ST/OBC community certificate.
